My car only squeaks when I start from a stopped position or I am traveling very slow and I am turning right or left. It is a very loud almost embarrassing noise. I am not very mechanically inclined when it comes to determining what kind of car problems I am having. What could be the cause of this?

It sounds like the fan / serpentine belt is slipping.

The belt drives the other devices besides the fan. One of them is the power steering pump. When you turn your steering wheel, it causes extra load on the pump and causes the belt to slip. At high speed the pump is already pumping high and little extra load wont make any difference. It's like the way car can peel out standing still (low speed) but can't do so while already moving.

Depending on the year, you will have manually tensioned or automatically tensioner. There's also belt conditioner spray. In the long run, you will probably need new belts.

Good Luck.

You will need to have it looked at to be sure, but without knowing what type of vehicle it is,things that can squeak in the front of a car are......bad ball joints, bad tie rod ends, damaged macpherson struts bearing pads, damaged sway bar links or bushings or even the steering rack if it is equipped. Take it somewhere and have it checked out.

Im not sure there is enough information to adequately answer your question here. I think you have ahd some really good answers and the only thing beyond what they have said that I can add is check your power steering fluid and make sure it isnt low. Beyond that it sounds like its time for a trip to the mechanic.

Make and model would help. Where does the "squeak" come from? front or rear? Does it go away if you touch the brake slightly while driving?
