It doesn't make sense that Neville can just pull the sword out of the sorting hat. We know for sure that the Goblin known as Griphook took the sword from Harry while they were attempting to retrieve the horcrux in Gringotts. Griphook grabs the sword and then runs into the oncoming wave of Goblins yelling, "THIEVES!". Unless Rowling explains that the sorting hat can instantly retrieve the sword from anywhere on Earth, we will never know how Neville was able to get the sword. Can you imagine Griphook standing in his home holding his precious sword when all of a suddent it just vanishes into thin air? Hard to believe!

He pulls it out of the Sorting Hat, like Harry did in the Chamber of Secrets.
Remember Voldemort summoned the Hat, and it landed on Neville's head and burst into flame? Harry attacked Voldemort from under the invisibility cloak, breaking the spell on the hat, then Neville took it off and could pull out the sword, as he is a true Gryffindor (and he definetely proved it in the last book!)

The sorting hat obviously has that capability, since it pulled the sword from wherever it had been in the Chamber of Secrets for Harry (there is no mention that Dumbledore had it before then, and even if he had, the sword would have had to be teleported through the school and its magical defenses--it wasn't in the hat when Fawkes brought it down). We ARE talking about magic here.

I think the act of conjuring Gryffindor's sword from the Sorting hat is meant to confirm Neville's status as the true heir to Gryffindor. Griphook, it would appear, got shafted by the wizards after all.

He pulls it out of the sorting hat, teh same way Harry pulled it out of the sorting hat at the chamber of secrets. Because a true brave action of a Gryffindor will persuade the sorting hat to give you the sword.

From the sorting hat. Neville is my hero since the 4th book, he really comes into his own. Good for him becoming a professor, eh?
So the sorting hat is more powerful than the goblins who had the sword last?
