I assume you have been checked to rule out prostatic cancer. Screening consists of a simple blood test, the PSA. Symptoms are as you described: frequency and urgency of unination, getting up at night to urinate, difficuty starting your stream, slow stream, progressing to acute urinary retention.

BPH or Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy is very common in men over 60. Treatment consists of taking any of several different classes of medicines: alpha blockers or 5 alpha reductase inhibitors. Sometimes surgery is necessary to improve urinary flow. The most common procedure is a TURP or transurethral resection of the prostate.
