Well not buying anything is the first step. I've found that many cold medications treat only your symptoms like coughing and sneezing. It is important to understand that actions like coughing and sneezing are in place because they help to rid your body of the antigen. Supressing those symptoms only helps the cold in your body.
Blow your nose often, cough heartily and sneeze as often as you need to. Drink a very large amount of water (or gatorade i've found works even better). Also, if you want an added boost, drink lots of orange juice for that vitamin C that helps repair cell damage, it'll really aid your immune system.
So, rest, fluids, vitamin C, blow your nose a lot.
Also, if you actually do end up going to the store, I'd suggest getting an expectorant, like "mucinex." It will make those coughs and sneezes and blowings of the nose more effective as it breaks up the mucous a little.
Hope this helps.

There is no cure to the common cold. If you don't want to take products that will help you cope with your symptoms, you're just going to have to wait it out. Drink plenty of water and get plenty of sleep.

If you do not want to take any medications to help relieve the symptoms for a cold, then just get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids.

SLEEP...
and hope and you feel better next day when you wake up as you dont want to buy anything.
OR
BORROW...
If you dont want to buy you can always rely on your friends who can give you some ointment/balm/vicks etc for free.. without having to spend a penny fom your pocket. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
OR
PRAY
Pray to god that he takes the cold away and heal you.

colds can't be "cured", the symptoms can only be treated. And unless you are just completely miserable its best to let it run its course. You may feel better faster; sometimes treating the symptoms only prolongs the cold.

Drink plenty of water and get lots of sleep. And when you get better, smile when you think of depriving the pharmaceutical industry of a few of your hard-earned dollars. Providing you look after it properly, the body is pretty good at healing itself from minor ailments without pills and potions.

you know the old saying, "feed a cold, starve a fever."
for me, hot toddy's help: a shot of brandy mixed with a tablespoon of honey and lemon, heated...that makes me feel better--or at least, the shot of brandy makes me feel better =X
(i see people have mentioned exercise...as much as i hate working out while sick, it does help me get over illness a little quicker)
you know, i recently read an article about vitamin c "overload" and it's effect on cold symtoms--no significant effect.
