I was recently given a conditional offer at uni which included passing police checks. At present my CRB has not even been sent off for. Prior to my app I made inquires as to how my 10 yr old record would effect me and was assured any decision would go b4 a panel of 3 people and they could not really see how it would effect me. I recently enquired as to how long it would be b4 I knew I was in or not. The course tutor asked me what I had been done for. He then rang me back 15mins later and said I he'd spoken to the ambulance service and they would not employ me after the course so he was withdrawing my application, he did so just like that off hes own back. I have worked a year and a half to get that place and I am devestated. I have a caution for shoplifting a conviction for criminal damage and shoplifting all committed when I was a teenager, none have which have prevented me from working with the civil service, youth service, st john or elderly residential homes. This seems so wrong

Of course it is discrimination. What else do you expect from the United States?

Not if it was conditional on police checks. Different companies have different policies. Ask for a copy of their policy regarding criminal records. If they just made it up, you might have a case, but if it's been in place a while, & there are no other people with records there, you're out of luck. Is there another company you can apply to?

Go back and apply anyway.. And apply elsewhere.. for similar jobs.

Convictions as a minor are not usually on your public record when doing a background search.. If they ask, simply say I had some trouble as a youth and have straightened up.

Now.. It may be "discrimiation" not to hire you for this but it usually is not "illegal" discrimination to hire a felon.

it sounds a little fishy due to the fact you worked for these other places with no problem. but some places have different policies on their hiring practices. don't jump the gun on assuming this is an instance of discrimination. i think that is sometimes, not all the times, an easy excuse for not getting something you want.

If the offenses occurred before you were an adult (18 in most US states), then the record should have been sealed.

But laws vary by state and country, so consult a licensed legal professional in your area to determine if you have any recourse.

But to answer your first question, yes it's discrimination, but it's valid discrimination since they are basing it on your individual conduct, not on your age, race, gender, or whatever.
