if not, then one should be able to walk into a pub with a lit cigarette, cigar, pipe etc

Oh...supplemental question.....cabinet ministers have owned up to smoking dope; do you think that they would ever admit to smoking a ciggie?

No, not unless they actually put it into their mouth and took a puff.
As for the cabinet ministers ever admitting to smoking a ciragette. - How outrageous, of course they couldn't ever admit to smoking a cigarette. Possibly smoking dope in their eyes is acceptable. You have heard the saying "Don't do as I do, do as I say". Enough said.
I'm not a smoker by the way ! !

Well, holding the lit cigarette puts one in danger of lung cancer, early death, countless health problems, and (if you carry out with your plan of carrying the cigar in a no smoking zone) also in danger of a gigantic fine and a good dose of humiliation. Plus, fyi, most no smoking zones do mean no smoking and as smoke would definitely be coming from a lit cigarette I would have to concur that the cigarette was smoking, putting it's owner in danger of being kicked out of the zone.

Yep it would be rising up from them . puffing or not.A friend of mine walked into a hotel with a rolled cigarette however it was not alight . He was getting a drink first then going outside to have both beer and smoke. The barmaid said you have to get out side..He said its not a smoke until its lit. She is a bit over the top by the sounds of that.

What's so special about smoking in pubs? All of the pubs and restaurants in my neighborhood are full of smokers. What country are you in? I am in the US. In which American cities can you not smoke in a pub???

If the non-smoker voluntarily took and held the lit cigarette, then yes they would count as a smoker for those purposes.

If the non-smoker did not voluntarily hold the lit cigarette, or took it just so that they could put it out, then no.

Maybe not, but the CIGARETTE would be smoking, so if it's a no-smoking environment, there's still a problem.

it depends on the environment where r u staying. If the holder of your lit-cigarette is inhaling smoke intentially or unintentially, he will be considered as Passive Smoker. Do remember cigarette is as harmful for passive smokers as for active smokers because smoke is finally emitting from the same cigarette.

... no ... because they wouldnt be smoking it??

if you want to walk into a pub with a lit cigarette but not smoke it then you are just being immature and trying to prove a point.

You can smoke for all i care, because i am not wasting 50 000 pound a year, damaging my health, heading towards an early death smelling and generally annoying everyone.

Yes. It's the smoke that's the problem not who's holding it.
