I believe smoking is more of a distraction than using a mobile phone. especially dangerous when kids are around the car. The ord explode was just a phrase but smoking and cars dont go good 2gether....u no car mats...carpet can easily burn if a fire gets out of hand then YES a carcould explode!

It does seem rather odd that smoking (taking your hand off the steering wheel), is allowed - but eating (same action) is not permitted!!

A common misconception, but in reality, the only way your car would explode is if you purposefully dropped the cigarette into the petrol tank.

With the way things are going, I would not be at all surprised if smoking in the car will be pushed for next. But you have to admit, it does cause a lot of accidents on the road from people who drop them on their laps.

Mobile phones are banned in cars because they ARE a distraction to the driver. You could drop a cigarette in your garden and it COULD catch fire.

There's a pretty big difference between the two.

It should be illegal to drive a car with the windows open, in case a wasp gets in, wasps have caused many more accidents than dropped ciggies.:)) And it should also be illegal for any more daft "ban it brigade" idiots on here!!

Mobiles in cars distract the drivers attention cars don't blow up if you drop a cigarette you obviously know nothing about cars.

It seems it all boiles down , to breathing , the wrong sort of air , so if they were to ban that , there whould be no need to worry.

What are we sheep , because thats the way things are going

Guess what? Its against the law already to sit in YOUR own car on Hospital grounds,IN Australia NSW,even with the dam window wound up. Really they act like your shooting up or something. I don't have it near others especially near children But what I do in my home car is my business. The government wont stop it they get too much money from it even when you take out medical expenses they are profiting from doing nothing but making them available to us in the first place.

Well the main reason it was brought in was the nations health , and to save the health service millions, smoking in your own car does not really bother others, I can't believe there is an idiot in Blackpool who runs a pub who is letting his customers smoke
omg man get real what about other peoples health ???

Selfish beyond belief!!!

Oh great another moaning smoker. Why cant you just stop smoking. It shouldnt need a law, dont you realise you are killing yourself attempting to look cool with a stupid little stick in your mouth (which really does not llook cool at all). Do us all a favour and quit.
