You need to change your cabin air filter. This is a paper filter usually located behind the glove box, which filters out fungus, dust, as well as bad smells from you heater and AC air. Change the filter about once a year, and you won't have any problems with smells in your car.

You are right, there use to be a spray. As I remember this was a problem in the very early years of manufactures switching from R12 to R134 freon. You might check with the dealer to see if they have any left over. Or you might contact a AC specialty shop and see if they can help. Or as mentioned above. Try Frebreeze ???

You need to replace it, it will always be their even after you've tried flushing it out. Chances are that it's probably been like this for a while, and once that odor sets in, it's almost impossible to get rid of, good luck.

Try using some Fabreeze, otherwise using coat hangers and baby wipes attached may also help.
