Simply pulling off the top growth or hoeing will have little effect on this weed as it will regrow. I presume that forking the ground over and picking out the white fleshy roots is not an option. So, that aside, weed killer it must be.

A weed killer based on glyphosate is probably best as this kills the roots as well as the leaves. The catch is, these herbicides don't only kill weeds they will also kill may other plants your mum would want to keep. If the convolvulus is in open areas where there are no other plants then a quick spray with glyposate will take care of business. If, as is common. it's wound through other plants then she will need to get a bit more creative. Creating a weed wand by attaching a piece of sponge to a short length of cane is a start. Then spraying some concentrated herbicide onto the sponge before wiping it along a few of the convolvulus leafs on each plant will do the trick. It's not necessary to get every leaf, just a few on each plant. If you are going to try this, do be careful not to hit plants your mum likes and even although glyphosate is relatively safe, do always wear rubber gloves when handling herbicides

I read this in a newspaper and it seems so simple that I don't know why it hasn't caught on. You need to don rubber gloves, followed by cotton gloves that have been soaked in Glysophosphate --- then stroke the glove up the stem to the tip. and this should do the trick without it killing off any other plant and the soil won't be contaminated.

As with most invasive species, pulling, digging the roots will help stop the spread. Good old RoundUp will kill any plant. Used undiluted it is a murder machine, guaranteed. Don't get it on any valuable plants, of course.
