Federal Minimum wage is going up from $5.15/hour to $5.85/hour. Do you think that's too much? I do. I believe that if they keep raising the minimum wage, people will stop seeking higher education. In fact, minimum wage earners are the same people that can go to college for free. They shouldn't raise anything for them.

So far, I see a lot of whiny answers.. it should occur to you that its your fault you earn MW, not mine.. go learn a skill or something if you want a higher paying job.

in fact they should eliminate the minimum wage entirely so more poor people from other countries can do the jobs you and i don't want. and while we are at it, we should eliminate safety regulations for them because they are expendable anyway. and while we are at it, we should eliminate health care for them because they know if they get sick, another poor person will take their place at the low pay job

You said: "if they keep raising the minimum wage, people will stop seeking higher education"
That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Especially when you're talking about a minimum wage of $5.85. Now, if they raised it to $15 a hour, then you might have a small point.
Absolutely, I think the minimum wage should be raised, and I think it should be raised much more than it's being raised.
By the way, I'm not a 'whiner'. I have a college degree and I earn *well above* minimum wage.

Umm...
No one is jumping for 5.85 an hour, saying to themselves "well, I could get a college education and make 30 grand a year, but instead I'll make 5 bucks an hour after income taxes."
By the way, I make the minimum wage, and no one is sending me to college for free. I filled out the forms and everything, and I didn't get a pell grant. Best I can do is take out massive loans with interest rates just below what you'd expect from a credit card.
$5.85 an hour isn't even enough to live in your own apartment by yourself unless you don't own a car, in most places I've lived.
Never said it was your fault, either. But it certainly is none of your business how much money I earn, especially if you have ever asked for a raise in your entire life, or earned one. How about all of the lower-class people get together and pass a law banning raises for you? Wouldn't that be class warfare?
Mind your business and focus on your own earnings.
People will stop seeking higher education? Because 6 bucks an hour is so much money? Right. That's why people need to work 60-80 hours a week to support their families. They are just in it for the money, those greedy poor people.
AC1BD- Uh, me, and everyone else that I know that goes to college PAYS for it.

No. A raise in minimum wage results in a decrease of entry level jobs. If someone has 10 employees at minimum wage, after an increase he will simply employ 9. This way he holds his expenses down. The people who receive the raise will not have extra purchasing power because prices will increase.

Try living on on $206 (current) to $234 (new) per week. That's $12,168 per year -- before taxes. For a single person, that's well below poverty line. For a family, it's absolutely insufficient.
And most states already have a higher minimum wage than this. California is $7.50, going up to $8 in 2008. So, as far as California (and many other states) the federal change is meaningless.
EDIT: And no, I haven't earned minimum wage since I was 16. I usually make more in 2~3 hours than what a MW earner gets per week. But unlike you I don't consider someone worthless just because they are unable for find anything better.

I live in Pennsylvania. The minimum wage will be raised to $7.15. The federal wage law will catch up eventually.
I am opposed to a minimum wage, but for economic reasons. Employers who have paid minimum wage most likely will cut back on employees, which is not good. They can raise prices, but that is not good either. They may lose business, or it is inflationary.
People who co to college want to earn $25 per hour, if not more. The minimum wage will not affect anyone's desire for wealth.

Sorry--this is just one more of the fake arguements that third-rate employers trot out every time the minimum wage gets raised--and I'm really surprised anyone falls for this one. The MW isn't a "living wage"--it certainly isn't going to "discourage" anyone from going to school.
All the MW does is prevent unethical or incompetent employers from paying abusively low wages. And--BTW--the only people who go to college "for free" are those with the grades to earn scholarships--they certainly aren't going to quit.

LOL .. That is so funny.. Please let me know how old you are and what state you live in and especially let me know what class of people you belong to ( and not just a wanna be class)? I mean, (if you dont understand) Who do you hang out with as a whole? Your saying that a mere $28. more a week is going to bracket them into a richer class where the government says no to education? I think you are one of these instigaters that like nothing more than to stir troubles up for one side or the other. But I have something I wouldn't mind raising up for you.!. if you get my meanin'

They are certainly making entry-level jobs a comfortable place to remain.
It is the responsibility of those job-holders to get up and get out....and let students, and those just starting out, have those jobs.
