Seriously, folks. Have you known ANYTHING run by the government that has functioned well? Take a look a social security. I say that the solution lies in people taking responsibility for their own healthcare, making it a priority, and not depending on someone else to do it for them. Your views?

Probaby not.
They can't run Medicare/Medicaid now.
BUT something does need to be done to it.
First go back to the old way of the more you have wrong, the more you pay.
If you are using the insurance's resource you ought to pay into it.
Second penalize abusers of the insurance, why pay for a hang nail in the ER?
Last give deductions yearly to gym goers and those who do healthy things in their life, like avoid the all day buffet.
Lifetime abuse of your body and health should not be rewarded.

Hi Hissin' K - I don't know if you're from the US or the UK. We have universal health care in the UK and it's getting harder and harder to dispense due to the advances in medicine. So many cures and not enough money to pay for them all.
Our Social Security system is very generous and whereas when it was first introduced (late 1940's) people bulked at the idea of getting 'free' anything (pride) and were therefore reluctant to claim what was theirs today's recipients see it as a 'right' and have no such misgivings.
The only answer would be 'means testing' i.e. if you can fund your own health care, you should, and if you can't the State steps in, however, 'Means Testing' is fraught with complications so I guess there's no real easy answer.

i look at it this way we can say the goverment will do this and that or keeping it the way it is will do this or that
my major problem with the it going universal is that some worthless trash that hasnt worked a day or will work a day will get the same coverage as i do. Now everyone gets this warm and fuzzy when we say we are all equal NO we are not some people are worthless not because of their looks but because of their actions
now universal health care may happen here in the US but remember we have set our selfs up for a communist party to walk in and then we will be TRULY EQUAL the goverment runs and enjoys things that the normal joe can not

All one needs to do is volunteer at a VA hospital or free clinic for a day and see just how well the government runs health care.

Anyone who still wants the government to be in total control of their lives after that is downright insane.

That's another thing I don't quite get. People fight for their freedom and against things that interfere with that freedom, such as the Patriot Act, but yet want the government to have total control over their bodies. Make up your minds.

Not to mention I think it's quite selfish of people to think *I* should be punished for being able to afford mine, so you want to take even more of my paycheck so you can continue mis-managing your own money, and require ME to pay for your unhealthy lifestyles.

Comon get your head out of the sand. Privatize it and corporations will and do make millions out of it so why should not these monies go into the govt coffers instead and keep the taxes down. Even here in Canada we are going private and if you should for some reason or other not able to pay your medical insurance premium of around $150. 00 per month you are S.O.L. for any kind of treatment might just as well crawl up and die.

The key would be to not have it run by the federal government but rather regulated by the government on the state & federal level.

Here are some points:

1. Non for profit hospitals - ALL hospitals should be required to & given a reasonable timeframe to convert from profit to non profit.
2. CEO pay - CEO pay for ANY company or organization that has anything to do with healthcare should be capped.
3. Stock Market - Any company that is in any way involved in the healthcare process cannot be publicly traded.

If you're one of the millions who can't afford insurance, then yes, it's better than nothing. If you already have your own insurance, then no.
Instead of universal health care, they should require all companies to cover their employees somehow, & spend our money that way instead. We'd still have choices, & therefore be able to keep at least some quality docs. Not that there's many left now anyhoo thanks to HMOs. Gov't healthcare is definitely not the answer.

People don't realize it, but Medicare is a form of universal healthcare that is being run fairly well. The exception is the drops in coverage it suffers, according to which party is in office.

Canada has a better health care system than the U.S. (according to World Health Organization statistics) and spends around half of what the U.S. spends on health care, measured as a proportion of Gross Domestic Product. In other words, it does a better job of delivering health care at a lower cost than the U.S.

Yeah, in this case, the government is doing a better job of running things than the free enterprise system in the U.S.
