Its one of the most controversial dates in Egyptian history.

on the 23rd of July 1952... the free officers succeded in a Military coup that later took the dimensions of a revolution in terms of popularity.

It started a chain of events that till today no one can clearly say if it was a blessing or a curse... Monarchy was abolished and the republic proclaimed in 1953. General Mohamed Naguib named as the first Egyptian ruler of Egypt in more than 2000 years (yes two thousand years).

Socialism was adopted and a series of policies aiming to improve the life were implemented... agricultural land reform... real estate laws... employment... industrialization... Free education and health services etc... But above all it revived the project of Arab unity and dignity.

Having said that the mistakes of that so called revolution were enormous... taking the country in uncalcualted military adventures... failed economic policies... ruling the country with an iron fist... prosecuting opposition... abolishing civil rights... creating a brutal police state.

Looking back... after more than 50 years... little has been accomplished... most if not all socialist laws and effects have been reversed, even from the constitution... farmers are poorer than ever... housing is as expensive as ever... Education and health services are free only on paper... the economy is a mess... the poor are getting poorer and the rich are gettin richer and above all civil liberties are not something to be proud of.

But we have to be grateful we got away with our territorial integrity after all those wars... and are still free from foreign rule at least theoretically speaking...

Another much shorter answer... the 23rd of July is just another holiday on the calendar... many people just won't or don't want to know or remember what it really stands for.
