Diesel engines are more expensive to purchase, more economical to operate, generally longer lived, require tuneups less often, and more expensive when you do need to repair. Gasoline engines are less expensive initially, more expensive to operate, are lighter weight, need more TLC, are shorter lived and less expensive to repair. If you drive longer distances and can afford the initial expense you will get better service from the diesel.

that depends on what you want from the car. for fuel economy diesels are much better since they run unthrottled all the time. for out and out performance, the difference these days is close, but the gas engine is still a bit better overall.
