Most history books will show the American Civil War began April 12,1861 with the firing on Fort Sumter in Charleston, SC and ending with Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse April 9, 1865.
If you like to be a bit contrarian you can date the first hostilities to January 9, 1861 when the Federal vessel "Star of the West" was fired upon when trying to re-supply Fort Sumter, SC and the end of the war to November 6, 1865 when the "CSS Shenandoah" surrenders to the British in Liverpool.
( This conflict is known as the War Between the States to many of us native southerners, also referred to as The War of Northern Aggression and The Late Great Unpleasantness by those gentile South of Broad Charlestonians)

The Civil War was the conflict between the Northern states (the Union) and the Southern states that seceded from the Union and formed the Confederacy. It is generally known in the South as the War between the States and is also called the War of the Rebellion (the official Union designation), the War of Secession, and the War for Southern Independence. The name Civil War, although much criticized as inexact, is most widely accepted.
Hope this helps! ;-)

April 12th 1861 and technically the war ended on April 9th 1865 when General Lee surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. However, there are some who are still fighting this war today.
