Mastication reduces the viscosity of NR by shearing the Polyisoprene polymers, but it's difficult to get a uniform level of shearing. This is why increasing the plasticity/decreasing the viscosity of NR is also done by heat and the addition of other chemicals to break these polymer bonds.
