First thing to do is join an Astronomy Club near you, or on the Internet. There you will meet many people who have a serious interest in Outer Space and Astronomy, with few of the hecklers that we get in here from time to time.

Check out Cornell University's Cool Website...You can go there by doing a search on the Internet using the key words:

Curious About Astronomy

Also, if you have not seen it yet, please go to

hubblesite.org

If you get to that site, look at their gallery of photos taken from the Huble Space Telescope of Comets, Galaxies, Planets, and other realy neat stuff. It will knock your socks off.

If you can get a summer job or find some other way to earn a little cash, you might want to eventually look around for a "good" used telescope so that you can see some of these things for yourself. Please don't get suckered into buying some 60 mm refractor package at the local store. Look for a good used "8 Inch Reflector" probably a Dobsinian Type (refers to the type of mount) for a beginner - maybe around $500. Then have great fun looking at what others cannot see.

Rather than try to put together something from a bunch of web sites, why not read an excellent book on astronomy, such as NightWatch by Terence Dickinson (Firefly)?

Get an astronomy textbook better a college level if you can handle it.
or
Here is a sweet site with 10 links for the beginner for free!

http://apps.exploratorium.edu/10cool/index.php?cmd=browse&category=3

I love it too, studied it in college and have owned many telescopes.

Save your pennies and get a good scope.
I suggest a dobsonian with the biggest mirror you can afford.

If you can swing it, get a Meade ETX125 go-to.
They are about $1000 but it is a great scope for a beginner.

Don't waste your money on walmart scopes.
they are junk.

Welcome to the hobby; it's the next best thing to being there!
