Yeah, horses can be pretty skittish. They'll tend to shy away from anything unfamiliar. Camels would likely frighten a horse not from the Middle East. In the old days, the phrase "hold your horses" originated with the circus. When a circus would parade through town the barkers at the front would call out to people to hold their horses so they wouldn't bolt at the sight of elephants and other exotic animals.

Probably because they spit. Horses are flight animals & if they cant see they cant run as fast. It could also be that they can hear the water movement in there humps. Just a wild guess.
