I knew a woman who tried to kill herself this way and ended up bleeding for like 11 hours until someone came and got her help. Now she needs a bunch of operations and she'll never be the same again. If you bleed enough and don't die, you end up with brain damage in a nursing home, drooling.

Yes you can die because you are losing blood. It depends on the physical condition that you are in when it happens . eg, were you running just before you were cut, if so your blood will be lossed at a faster rate because your heart was beating faster.
Usually it will take a few minutes to die. And yes it can be repaired by surgery.
