Sydney and Melbourne are the largest cities so have the most jobs available. All four cities have excellent universities but which university to choose depends on what you are studying. Some unis are stronger in some areas than others.

To get an idea about casual employment available look at the classified advertisements in the newspapers on a saturday
The Sydney Morning Herald http://www.smh.com.au
The Canberra Times http://www.canberratimes.com.au
The Age (Melbourne) http://www.theage.com.au
The Courier Mail (Brisbane) http://www.couriermail.com.au

I think that you'll find work in any city in Australia if you're willing to do the jobs that Australian employers have difficulty filling, such as hospitality (waiting tables), cleaning, labouring, etc.

If you mean employment in your profession, I would think that Melbourne and Brisbane would be easier to find work as a professional than Sydney (lots of jobs but even more candidates for jobs) or Canberra (a large portion of jobs are public service and thus only available to Australian citizens). But if you present well and are willing to work hard, you'll find work to support yourself anywhere in Australia. Employers all over the country have more jobs on offer than they can fill.

Good luck!

Canberra is good if you are an Australian citizen, most people go on to the public service (including myself). But for graduate positions, it would be better to go to Sydney or Melbourne if you are not Australian. However, this always depends on what feild you are in.
