I keep thinking that if I'm happy, then life or fate is going to come along and smack me down.
I think that I'm not allowed to be happy or successful without dire consequences.
Is this weird?

It seems to me that 1) you think you don't deserve happiness, and 2) you may be making setbacks even bigger than what they are. Regarding #1, you may be doing that female thing that so many of us do: belittling our achievements and thinking that we don't deserve success. Fate does not give you success - you do that yourself. See how men are at work: they say, "I did this" more than "We did this." Women usually do the opposite. Regarding #2, everyone goes through ups and downs but when you reach a down just pull yourself up by your bra straps, stick your chin out and fight back. You succeeded the first time, you WILL do it again. My thought is, if everything were nice and beautiful, how would we learn to truly appreciate the good times? Life would be kinda boring, no?

not unusual.
Obviously not something you would willingly choose for yourself. But it is likely a learned behavior.
You must get to the root of your beliefs that cause this outcome.
It comes down to self-worth.
The humility aspect of it is good. So be careful not to become arrogant in your search for something better.
It happens easier than you might think.
The universe is like a big math equation which gives you difinitive effect for particular cause. What you put out will bring predictable events. Most of us are not enlightened to have awareness of all of our subconcious thoughts and drives. And so we tend to fail to see what we are truely doing or why.
