In Indian folklore,a heroin or a princess is described as Fair and beautiful and so they learn and acquire a liking for it from their childhood.Also,in many parts of the country,fair colored people belong to upper casts and royalty.Added to all this is the fact that geographical conditions do not allow most of the people to have a fair color.It is thus a cumulative effect on the mass mentality of the people.There is no racism or any such thing involved in it .Yes ,for an out sider,things may appear differently but in reality it's minor issue.Incidentally,Asia and India particularly,are the biggest markets for creams,soaps,lotions and such cosmetics which claim to enhance Fairness.Hope that in all Fairness, this shall put the issue in correct perspective.

This happens in other cultures. Look at the ms universe pageants. Most women who represent their countries, look nothing like most of the women in their country.
