If an "agent" ever offers to represent you but wants money up front,...RUN AWAY!! Real agents work on commission...when they get you an acting job, then they earn a portion of what you earn. There are LOTS of scam artists out there who say they'll make you famous but first you have to pay them for photographs or interviews or lessons, etc...NOT TRUE! Be very careful. An agent, from the beginning, is free.

Hi,
Agents get paid ONLY after they get you a job and not before. Never! If they tell you that they can get you work if you pay them first, walk out without blinking an eye. You might find one who is dishonest and who will tell you lots of good things, but don't fall for it.
The first thing I would recommend though, is that you get good training. You might be able to get an agent, but you also want to be able to keep him/her and get sent out on lot of auditions. If you are not trained, it will take casting directors for whom you audition, all of about 10 seconds to see that. What you will then find is that you will not be called back anymore to audition for them, because you will be considered a waste of their time. Take your time and build a base first. You will be glad you did.
I answer questions like this a lot and so instead of writing the same or similar answers over and over again, I have created a 28-page ebooklet that answers pretty thoroughly the part of your question that you didn't ask, but should have.
Just go to http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/acs-blog.html , sign in on the right side of the page and you can download it for free. It's called: What It Takes To Become An Actor.
Then when you are ready, you can refer to this page: http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/how_to_get_an_agent.html . It takes you through a process that I used to get two agents and a personal manager in a short period of time.
Just remember that getting an agent will most probably not answer all your prayers. You still have to do your share. Remember that the agent only gets 10% of the take, so in my opinion, a good attitude to have is that YOU have to do 90% of the work to make sure you get seen. If it turns out that your agent is getting you a lot of auditions, then great, but don't count on it. And that, my friend, is why I answered the first part of this question the way I did. You need a lot of other things if you are in this for the long haul!
Hope this helps!

Agents work on commission only, usually 10% to 15% depending on the city.
They take their commisison from the money you make from acting roles.
