If employers are looking for a bachelor's degree, then you need one. I'd recommend it even if it weren't for the employers.

Keep in mind how employers screen the dozens or hundreds of resumes they recieve for a job listing: the first thing they do is check minimum requirements. If they are looking for a bachelor's degree and all you have is an associate's, they'll simply pass over your resume. After all, they probably have plenty of applicants who have a bachelor's.

Ten years ago, during the dot-com boom, an AS in CS was good enough to get a nice job. But those days are gone. Today, a BS or BA is the minimum. Talk to your JC about transferring to a 4-year institution. Many 4-year universities have a program set up with nearby community colleges in which you are guaranteed admission to the university if you meet certain academic requirements, such as taking (and passing) all the equivalent lower-division courses required for the major.

Upper-division courses are so much more interesting than the lower-division ones you took at JC. It sounds like you have the interest to learn more. Go for it! The US needs more CS majors.

You might need to go for some certification e.g. CCNA/MCSE/SAP
You can find a freelance programmer at your area to help you out. Check websites like http://askexpert.info/

I recommend that you find some local users groups that are involved in whatever you are interested in -- e.g. Linux, Perl, General computer users, etc. Often they have mailing lists where they can answer yours and other's questions, and you can make contacts there.
