It is pumped to the surface, sent to a refinery, and turned into a multitude of products that people like you and me buy. The resulting profits go into the sausage-fingered hands of some greasy old fat men smoking cigars and creating havoc in the middle east. The fat men eat polar bears for breakfast and lunch, and for dinner they dine on a roasted blend of African and Middle-Eastern children.

Crude oil is sent to a petroleum distillation plant, where the various components of the oil settle into layers, according to their density. Lighter components like gasoline rise to the top. Heavier fuels like diesel are in the middle. Really heavy compounds like tar sink to the bottom. These different layers are then put to different uses.
