precise origin of the name probably cannot be determined with certainty. Some sources place the origin with George Washington, who referred to the state in December 1784 as "at present the seat of the Empire."

When George Washington referred to New York state as "the seat of Empire" in 1784, he set the seed for the state's long-term nickname which appeared in around 1820 - the Empire State.
It is this which appears on state licence plates.

He is not going to "retaliate". Is gay marriage the only sin which God places above all other sins ? I think not. Sin is sin and God gives all humans the right to be wrong. In general, God has appointed a time when He will send Jesus back to earth to deal with the issue of mankind and his ignorance [having little or no knowledge of] God and His ways. God is in the saving business - not the punishment business or we all would be eradicated by now. You, most definitely have some very bad theology.

the state got that nickname from being the seat of money and power, via Wall Street and the magnates of industry who were called 'Empire Builders'.

I live in NY, and am originally from CA. So I'll give you the rundown on why. Are you in NY too? I love the state motto, but not the state, lol.

New York acquired its nickname “Empire State” to recognize its vast wealth and variety of resources.

Emblazoned on a dark blue field is the state coat of arms. The goddess Liberty holds a pole with a Liberty Cap on top. Liberty stands for freedom. At her feet is a discarded crown, representing freedom from England at the end of the revolutionary war. On the right is the goddess, Justice. She wears a blindfold and carries the scales of justice. Meaning that everyone receives equal treatment under the law. The state motto "Excelsior" on a white ribbon expresses the idea of reaching upward to higher goals. On the shield a sun rises over the Hudson highlands and ships sail the Hudson river. Above the shield is an eagle resting on a globe representing the Western Hemisphere.
