Yes, I know it was the symbol of the Nazis and we can never forget the holocaust. However the nazis did not create it. The symbol is very popular in eastern religions as well as cultures around the globe. It used to be a symbol for good luck and fortune.

The swastica is now fully compared to nazism and the like. Hindus/buddists/jainsm people are being attacked for publically wearing these relgious symbols by stupid people.
It's a symbol, how can you ban a symbol in public, all you have to do is draw it.

The swastika is not bad.

Right after the war, i don't think the allies would put up with its display. tempers were high. And by now, it's Germany's business, and they have done what they think is right. I rather appreciate them for it. I think they do it partly out of respect of the sensibilities of the Jews, and a show of disgust with Hitler, and bravo for the Germans. If I were going to get on a high horse about freedom of speech, i think i could find something else besides the germans banning the swastika.

Germany banned the swastika because it is a symbol. But symbols are rarely every JUST symbols. Instead, they point to (signify) something - particular religious stances, ideologies, political positions, history, organizations, etc. In Germany, the swastika as a symbol signifies a horrible moment in history for them. Outside of Germany, we associate Hitler with the Holocaust but his legacy in Germany is so much deeper (not to downplay the horrors of the concentration camps by any means). He wrecked havoc on the German people, government and society, leaving lasting marks (quite literally). The symbol, then, is banned because the ideology is anathema to the people who still live in its shadow.

Obviously, the swastika - as a symbol - signifies more than German history to so many throughout the world, and I'm sure that even Germans respect its multiplicity. But the ideology signified by the swastika in Germany holds a painful enough memory that the symbol warrants banning.

It is not forbidden to display it in Germany if it's unmistakably used as a Hindu or Buddhist symbol. I've seen a Hindu altar with lots of swastika on it in Germany.

But the thing is that most people here don't know much about these religions and they do associate the swastika with Nazis. I also can't help to automatically associate it with that, although I know that if used in some religions it has nothing to do with that.

I was always taught that the Nazi reversed the direction to which it is represented in Eastern religions. e.i. clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. So there is a slight difference so I would support a ban on the Nazi's interpretation of it as it has a quite evil meaning and is extremly offensive and insulting to display it but there should be freedom to use it in it's original meaning in the religious sense. There should proabably be a better understanding of it within the public though to avoid people getting attacked for misinterpretations.

Because a sawed off psychopath with half a moustache ruined the symbol for Germans, regardless of the fact that the symbol is literally THOUSANDS of years old.

It's been used in the Germanic lands for many thousands of years. It's been found in cave paintings, and ancient carvings. The symbol, even in Germany, is far far older than the Nazi regime.

because it's become a symbol of national SHAME.

Just like the term WHITE is becoming synonomous with Hate , because of the 'white power" people.

Hitler messed it up , now it's seen as a symbol of hatred. So they banned it.

I am pretty sure they're not going to roust a buddhist monk for it, but i'm absolutly sure if you have it tattooed on you and a shaved head, pair of doc martins. . .

Yeah,Hindus had been using the swastika before Hitler's great great great......grandmother was born. It's understandable people don't want to be reminded of Hitler, but you can't take the swastika away from a Hindu. It's like telling a christian he can't wear the cross.
