Many things are possible. It's true that acrid smoke could cause chemical burns, so could any number of things that were burning in the fire, as well as the fire itself. This could burn the outer layer of the eye or actually cauterize the eye itself. The damage could vary from irritation, to temporary blindness, to full and permanent blindness. Only a medical examination could determine the extent of the damage and offer a prognosis and treatment options.
