I posted this question on an Andy Griffith trivia board a few weeks ago and also sent a query to 'Ask an Expert.' Both replied that it was never revealed how Andy's wife died.

He was married to Barbara Bray Edwards for 23 years (1949-1972). they divorced and he married Solica Cassuto (1973 - 1981). I am assuming they divorced because he married Cindi Knight in 1983. Which wife died? The current one?

Andy lives with his wife and two daughters in Melbourne, Australia.
