What was the little miserable, moaning creature at the end of the book, when Harry and Dumbledore were talking and they were in that big white room... Dumbledore said it could not be helped, etc. Did I miss something? Was that ever explained? What was it?

It was never explained, but it was the piece of Voldemort's soul that was hidden in Harry's scar. That is why Harry tells Voldemort later when he confronts him to show remorse, he doesn't want him to end up like that miserable creature that cannot be helped.

The scene shown is a little off from the actual scene because Harry in the drawing holds no wand, when in the book he ends up holding two at the same time. But the cover is meant to be just after they both cast their spell. Voldemort is falling over dying/dead, and Harry is reaching up to catch the Elder Wand. They are in the Great Hall surrounded by resistance members, and the enchanted ceiling shows the dawn rising outside.... hence the golden color of the sky. If you have the deluxe version (which I'll get in the mail tomorrow, yay!) the scene shown is where Harry, Ron, and Hermione escape from Gringotts on the blind dragon.

It was Voldemort! Remember the form he was in during the Goblet of Fire? : ) When he was returned to some sort of existence, he still wasn't really a human. He has damaged and split his soul to the level that he isn't really human. His humanity is nothing but I deformed bundle of mockery. That is why when Harry was in limbo between life and death as a real person, Voldemort was just that little deformity. He doesn't exist enough/ doesn't have enough soul left to have been depicted in that special place as a person.

Dumbledore was telling Harry that it was too late for Voldemort. He has committed too many evil acts to ever have his soul be redeemed. He would never show remorse for the acts he had committed.

Many others have said it already...but yeah, it was Voldemort. The piece of him that resided in Harry. Harry was able to look at that repulsive, pitiful, infantile thing and realize, slowly, that this was what was in store for Voldemort in the afterlife. After all that's where Harry was---the afterlife, talking to Dumbledore.

It was a brilliant book though, wasn't it?

Absolutely amazing. :)

Maybe that was the part of Voldemort's soul that resided in Harry that had just been killed. That's just a guess though, because you're right, they didn't explain fully. Or if they did, I did not catch it.
