It's a little of both. Active sports keep you warm in cool weather so typically the clothes are light. Before you start it's nice to have a jacket and nice again when you're done.
It's so much better if some company will pay (read "Here is a free jacket.") you to wear their jacket or logo (read "Please show off our logo if you didn't wreck in an epic fashion").
If it were just about the logo then it could easily be on the clothes you wear while participating.

Athletes wear the jacket before the plays so their muscles stay warm and their joints limber. After the plays, in addition to staying warm, it keeps them from getting a chill, since they are usually covered in persperation. In dry climates indoors, the persperation evaporates, chilling the body, especially the head, so they get a cold. Outdoors, it's even worse (wind, night, etc.) and if you've ever done anything that caused you to perspire, you know that once you stop and you're in a wind or in a dry area, you quickly get chilled and it's easier to get a cold.
The sponsor logos are a bonus...as are the boards around the field, the stands, the arena, you name it...if it's got a blank surface, it will have a sponsor's name on it.

Most likely to endorse their sponsors whose logo is on the jacket....
Other then that, fast cooling muscle tissue can easily cramp.
