Firstly, there is no way you could possibly only pick 1.. There are just way too many. The following is a list of my personal favourites, in no particular order, but they are all true geniuses at what they do for different reasons...
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
David Gilmour
Yngwie Malmsteen
Brian May
Gary Moore
Carlos Santana
Mark Knopfler
Kirk Hammett
Slash
Angus Young
Prince
Dave Murray
Robbie Krieger
Ace Frehley
Mick Box
Robbie Robertson
Lita Ford
James Hetfield

There are so many more that I havent listed, but the list does go on! They all add their own personal style, and no 2 are the same. I think all guitarists are legendary. But it goes without saying, that all the classic rock (60's, 70's, 80's) had the best guitarists of all time.

Jimmy Page - so versatile in every aspect of the guitar. He can play fast, powerful rock songs, to slow, melodic acoustic guitar pieces. He is the best improvisor I have ever seen besides Stevie Ray and Jimi. Not only is he the best guitar player, but he is the best music maker out of all the rock guitarists in history.

The best guitarist ive ever heard is Eddie Van Halen. He reinvented the guitar. Jimi hendrix is a close second. Slash should not even be on a top 100 list.

Well in my opnion I'd have to say it comes to a four way tie. Jimi Hendrix, Kirk Hammet, Slash, and Mr. Diamond "dimebag" Darell. But no one person is really the best in the world. Each guitar player, singer, drummer, and anybody in a music career brings their own flair and twist to music. Everyone plays a little differently. No two players are the same. And on the bass guitar Cliff Burton was definately one of the best and a personal favorite of mine.

I think people tend to answer these questions by thinking of people whose music they like regardless of whether the person was actually the best. For me, I think Carlos Santana is the best rock guitarist....flashy licks, beautiful tone on slower stuff...although his music isn't my favorite.
