Aww, grandma jumped the gun. The baby is too young. Some doctors will give you the okay to introduce the taste of food around 4 months, but that is only in VERY small quantities. Their digestive system is not ready for solids until about 6 months of age. Even if you tried to feed her now, she still has the thrust reflex, so she would just push the food right back out.
Generally, rule of thumb is that babies are ready for solids when they hold their own head up and sit up with little support. At 3 months, she obviously isn't there yet.

I started my daughter at 2 months & my son at 3 months. I think as long as your baby is ready it should be fine. Baby food will keep in the cabinet unopened for about a year, they should have a use by date on them. Don't let anyone tell you when she should be on solids or not, it's up to you. Most babies who are ready will always want the food you're eating. My kids needed more than milk, so I gave them baby food. By the time my daughter was 4 months old, she didn't want baby food anymore but proper food, so I gave it to her.

Babies should be given only formula or breast-milk for the first six months of life. Jarred and boxed baby food lasts for quite some time in the cupboard, so you can safely save it if it hasn't been opened. Remember that there are some foods that you are recommended to stay away from until after a year - dairy, wheat, strawberries, citrus. Nut products wait until after two years. This is to prevent allergies.

They all have expiration dates. Go by those dates if they arent opened.
You should NOT be feeding your baby babyfood at that age. Cereal should be started around 5-6 months and babyfood after that. The old recommendation was 4 months for cereal (when my daughter was a baby) but when I had my son she said that the American Academy of Pediatrics changed that recommendation to 6 months before solids.

Here's a bunch of information on starting solids: http://www.babycenter.com/baby/babyfeeding/index#startsolidsBkmk
The current trend is to wait until about 6 months old. The newest studies have concluded that before then a babies intestinal tract is just not ready to handle solids very well. In addition to age, there are other sides of readiness listed in those articles on babycenter.
As for how long the food is good for, it will all be labelled with "use by" dates (just like milk and other foods). It's good for a long time, so there's no immediate rush to use it or lose it at this point.

Some babies can live on breastmilk alone for the first year or so, but I generally went by when the baby formed teeth. Once I saw the little 'toofers', I began letting my son try baby foods similar to whatever we had for dinner.
Another guideline is how your baby eats and if he or she is having a growth spurt.

Yes, too young. I would wait till at least 4 months but they say not to start solids till 6 months. Just check the use-by date on the baby food, it should last a while.

A little too early. Start with a little bit of oatmeal and rice cereal for baby first when she is 4 months old. Just save food and check for expiration like person said above.

Save the baby food. It will last for quite awhile. There should be an expiration date on the box or jar.
Two or three months is much too young to start on baby food.
Your pediatrician will tell you at what age to begin baby food. My daughter's pediatrician told her that starting on baby food too young set's the child up for allergies later.
