Any idea what the problem could be? We don't have any more info on this from the owner besides it runs well anyway, but I think it's a bad idea. It may be a cheap car, but prob. won't last long. Opinions and ideas on what the problem could be, please?

It could be piston slap or it could be just the valve lifters bad. Hard to say with the info.

If you are talking about a rapping, metallic sound when it is idling that gets louder on acceleration, you are talking about rod bearings or main bearings. The engine is gone and needs to be rebuilt. You might drive it 1 or 2 weeks and get a thousand miles out of it but it will fail. On the highway, the failure would be devastating to the engine. An engine rebuild would run about 2 to 4 grand depending on the size and make. Way more for an exotic or performance car. DO NOT BUY THE CAR unless it is a restore able classic and you have the desire and means to treat it right. For a useful vehicle as it is, this is not one.

id tell him to be real careful with buying that one even though its cheap ,it may wind up being more to repair it than its worth, some cars are like that, the repair bill can be double what the car is actually worth,so tell him to be real careful,a engine knock can be anything,he may wind up buying an engine for it,good luck with it.
