yes everyone here is right but also ther must be some money changeing hands between a site like www.download.com and some of the bigger software\app producers as im sure the makers get alot of buisness from people using the free\trial versions of there software and then liking\using it so much they then buy the full version.

some of them don't as you remember with napster they just wanted to make materials previously unknown to the consumer, readily available, although through illegal methods.

many computer hackers, pirates, crackers, are really on the people's side and want to see prosperity, some take it under their own wings to say this is wrong, and they go fix it how they see fit,

Most run heavily on advertisements posted on their sites. This is how a lot of sites that do not directly sell products make money.
