The following is from the Peace Corps website:

"Opportunities are available for those with a combination of job experience and education, though some opportunities require a four-year degree. Opportunities for community college students are also available."

The website says that at least a limited knowledge of a foreign language helps to be chosen for overseas assignment as a relief worker/volunteer.

There is a quiz you can take on the Peace Corps website. Fill in your classes and job experience and it will tell you how qualified you are.

Help is needed in poor areas very badly. The best qualification you can have is to be willing. If you want to work in health education, then any sort of medical training would help in that goal. But if you are willing to go help those in need, I am sure one of the many non-profit organizations will recruit you to help hands-down.

Either social work or public health sound like they would be a good fit for you. What is your undergraduate background? In social work you get lots of opportunities to provide hands on assistance to the poor and needy with preventive health care and care when ill, as well as many opportunities to provide relief care in the event of natural disasters. Public health provides some of the same challenges, but tends to be more policy oriented.

If you take classes that fall into humanities and go for a degree in social work, they'll help you accomplish what you want. As for becoming a relief worker, the Red Cross has LOTS of training courses. Being disaster certified has allowed me to open hurricane shelters and help lots of misplaced people. It's great! Check out your local Red Cross to see what classes they have that you may be interested in.
