I was just in Las Vegas three weeks ago and the construction is causing terrible delays for any form of motor vehicle traffic. All of the roads that run North and South are affected not just the Strip. So, here is my recomendation. Take the free tram from Mandalay Bay to Excalibur. Walk across the Strip and cross Tropicana Ave to the MGM Grand. The monorail station is behind the MGM. It takes you right to the Convention Center. Be advised, the walk from Excalibur to the monorail station is longer than you think. Leave plenty of time. Remember, you have to walk all the way through the Excalibur and all the way through the MGM Grand. I bet it is the better part of a mile which takes at least 15 or 20 minutes to cover. Then you have to walk from the monorail station to where you need to be at the Convention Center. Distances in Las Vegas are greater than they look. Driving is normally the quickest way if you know the back streets. But the construction is squeezing them down to one lane serving both directions in some places, you often sit for an hour trying to go a few blocks. Taxi meters keep going even when sitting still. So they are not only subject to the same delays but one trip could cost as much as a rental car does for an entire day. Until they finish the construction projects, the Monorail is the best bet. I suppose you could have a taxi pick you up and drop you off at the MGM to save some walking. But taking a taxi to the convention center is not the best bet. *

I just stayed there last weekend, and it was great. My room, was wonderful really big, very clean, the amenities are great. I had the spa room. On the outside the Mandalay is a bit ghetto fab with all the gold, but inside it looks really nice. There are a ton of restaurants and shopping. I recommend the RM Seafood, if you like seafood of course. The pool is awesome, there is a wave pool and lazy river, along with the regular pools. I would recommend renting a cabana and going in on it with your friends if you can, you get some shade, a cabana boy, and a tv. Also, the Spa is awesome. I had a wrap/scrub with Dawn, she rules!
I don't think there is anything wrong with that end of the strip. The Mandalay connects to the Luxor, and that to the Excalibur, which is just a walk way away from the New York and MGM Grand. If you want to go elsewhere just hop on the tram or cab it.
Also the buffet at the Paris is pretty good as far as buffets go. I tried the Rio Buffet of the World, had lots of variety, but the quality was lacking.
If you really want to shop go to Fashion Show Mall, every high end Dept store you can think of.
Anyway, Good luck! Have a great time!

Mandalay Bay is at the southern end of the Strip. Mandalay Bay is one of the nicest hotels on the Strip. It's not gaudy like the rest and people who've been there always love it.
The Luxor is right next door through a pathway and is undergoing a big change. The Bay is not too far from the MGM. I've walked between the two, although it's very hot outside right now.

Mandalay Bay is beautiful! It is at the far end of the strip--but I love that end, the other end is older & attracts a different crowd. There is a free Tram down to Excalibur & the monorail (not too much $ if you're going far) picks up a MGM so you can easily get wherever from there for not too much money. If you're trying to go really high end, check out THE hotel at Mandalay--incredible looking suites. (Not that I can afford it). The only catch is that the gaming tables rarely go less than $15 if you're into BJ, but Luxor (next door & connected via tram & walkway) does in the early AM.

The Manadalay Bay hotel is very good indeed, but it is also definitely at the wrong end of the strip. The best place to stay is central strip, Bellagio / Caesars / Mirage / Harrahs / Flamingo / Ballys / Paris / Planet Hollywood. Then you won;t have a massive walk to get down to Mandalay / Luxor or Wynn / Venetian.
There are some great bars and restaurants in Mandalay and MGM, but also in TI and Wynn, in my advice, stay central.

It's hard to say if it's on the "wrong" end of the Strip. Basically, it depends on what you're looking for. Mandalay Bay is close to Luxor, Excalibur, New York, and the MGM Grand.. which are all good. Tropicana is close too, but is personally not one of my favorites. See what entertainment is offered by these hotels, and decide if that's good for you.
