I just purchased one yesterday, after some extensive research. I traded my 2005 Acura TL.

BMW build a beautiful car. Expect to pay though the nose for any extras you want. The more powerful 2007 engine was certainly much needed, and has really improved what was last year the 325i. There are a surprising number of gadgets and extras on the car that you discover after reading the manual. If you're used to Japanese cars as I am, you are used to all the technology being in your face. Germans prefer tasteful understated designs. They hide incredible technology, but it is still there.

But the real reason you buy a BMW is for the driving experience. When you drive one it feels like you own the road. It feels like you can drive better than you really can. The way the car passes through the bends unruffled and hugs the road like a sports car is phenomenal. I never had that in any previous cars I've owned.

Take a test drive and throw the car through some bends and see what happens. It sells itself to you.

Consider that it has one of the best depreciation records in its class, has won so many awards it's not even funny, and has four years of free service. The only thing you will ever have to replace is tires. Even the oil changes are free.

Now consider alternative cars in the same price range:

Acura TL

Nice car, plenty of toys, so-so handling, fast in a straight line. Boring looking.

Lexus IS250/350

The IS is good looking, but gutless performance unless you go to the 350, and even that has so many electronic gadgets trying to keep you safe it feels like a car with 100 less horse power. Boring.

Mercedes C class

I'm sure very nice, but Mercedes really have had issues with the build quality in recent years. They keep getting hammered in reviews for that.

Audi A4

Nice car, not very interesting though.

Infiniti G

Incredible reviews, arguably better value than the BMW, Consumer Reports top pick. I've never driven one since the nearest dealer is over 100 miles away.

So for me there was no competition. With the 2008 model year just around the corner and only a couple of very minor changes along with a price hike, I decided to go with the '07 and got a very nice deal. In some markets you should be able to negotiate to $1,000 over invoice if you are willing to buy one off the lot.

Consider joining some BMW forums, and check sites like Edmunds.com for reviews and pricing details.

Oh you asked what I don't like about it. I think the key is a slightly pointless design. I would like a free iPod hook up as standard. I'd like 20 more HP for the same price because I'm greedy that way. I believe an alarm system should be standard on this kind of car. I wish that the alternative to real leather was a nice cloth seat as it is in Europe. Fake leather in this kind of car is insulting. I think the orange color on the radio is old fashioned looking. I can't read the radio display easily with polarized sunglasses on. I'd like a larger display on the radio. I'd like an oil temperature display rather than an MPG gauge.

But generally speaking it's an awesome car, and I cannot wait to do some unnecessary driving today. I also can't wait to break the engine in so I can thrash it!

I have the 07 328i with the sports package and it's a phenominal car. The only issue that I have with it is gas mileage. I only get about 17 miles per and drive less than 2 miles back and forth to work. I don't so much having to use the high octane, it'll be good for the car in the long run. Test drive numerous cars before settling down with just one. You'll be glad you did after you purchase the one that you like. Good luck!

eh, its not for everyone. I loved the older bimmers, but the new one (I drove an 06 325) was noisy, maybe I've been driving around the Lexus too long. Either way, I hated the interior. Comfort access on that car is a must, BMW has made it harder to start a car w/ a push button than it would be w/ a regular key....whatever.

Still the drive was fantastic.

I bought a 2007 328i in December 2006. I love it. What's bad about it? I did have a difficult time finding the right cable for my ipod. The single CD player is not enough music for me. I can't think of anything else not good about it. I got the sport package ( a must for the larger wheels and tight suspension ).

If you want your car to start dependably and not rust away, get the Beemer. If your too worried about cost and don't keep a car longer than 3 years, test drive both.
