Louisville is a relatively safe city.

Just like other cities, there are certain areas that should be avoided if you are unfamiliar with the city.

A general rule of thumb is to not go where there are double digit numbered streets (4th is fine, 14th is not). 9th St. is a dividing line between downtown and the West End. There are nice areas west of 9th, but if you are unfamiliar with the city you should not go west of 9th as it is mainly residential with few tourist attractions.

A resource to help you know which areas to avoid is the murder map by the local newspaper.

Louisville has its share of crime especially in the downtown area and after dark. It's probably not the most crime ridden city in the whole world. OTOH, I wouldn't wander around lost and drunk at night either. You can check out the local news websites to get some idea. www.courier-journal.com www.wlky.com www.wave3.com

In terms of going on a vacation there, there isn't a whole lot to see there. You will see some tourists on a Sunday afternoon there (in downtown Louisville), but they are usually from very small towns in KY. There are malls and restaurants there too, but there's nothing that you can't find in most other US cities. IMHO Louisville is a place where ppl live and work, but I don't think of it as a really popular tourist destination. Though Louisville is geographically a midwestern state, it was a "border state" during the Civil War and the ppl there strongly identify themselves as Southerners. Ppl from other southern states (AL, GA, etc.) laugh and say that KY isn't in the south. If I planned a vacation, I'd go to Calif., NY, FL or Massachusetts. But that's just my opinion.

I once drove through it, to get to Lexington so I dont really know. However according to areaconnect.com, it seems to not be so safe. However if your just going on vacation, i'm sure there are alot of very nice parts of louisville. Louisville is the first city I saw when entering Kentucky and it was just gorgeous, it makes an amazing first impression of kentucky.
