Actually, the medication is Metformin. Diagnosis is blood work and ultrasound. Sometimes the Metformin helps enough but sometimes Clomid is needed to help with ovulation. Best of luck to you!

Usually, they diagnose with a vaginal ultrasound of the ovaries to see if the cysts are present, how many there are, and take measurements.

They may also send you for a 2 hr glucose tolerance test to determine if you may be insulin resistant, which many women who have PCOS are insulin resistant.

If insulin resistance is confirmed, they will give you glucophage to regulate the ovaries and hopefully minimize the cysts. A lot of cysts will go away on their own and most Dr's do not like to remove them unless you are beyond the child bearing age or do not plan to conceive because scar tissue can develop on the ovaries.

If you are sexually active, the doctor may perform a gynecologic examination to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms, but this is not always necessary for diagnosis.
A doctor may also perform blood tests to diagnose PCOS or other conditions, such as thyroid or other ovarian or gland problems. Blood tests allow doctors to measure androgen, insulin, and other hormone levels. The results of these tests can help doctors to determine the type of treatment a girl will receive. Your doctor may also order another test, called an ultrasound, to look at your ovaries and to determine if you have cysts or other abnormalities of the ovaries. Because cysts are not always visible, this test is not always used.

There are several different ways but it is more like a checklist of symptons...irregular periods, no ovulation, usually overweight, thinning of the hair (male pattern baldness), skin tags, darkening or skin around the neck. The other test that can be done is in regards to blood sugar. If the Dr sees the other symptoms they may wasnt to get a fasting blood glucose test to check insulin levels. I hope this helps. Good Luck!!

your doctor will order a blood test in order to check your hormone levels. progesterone levels are high with PCOS. women with PCOS have abnormal periods (unpredictable) and it is often accompanied by cysts on ovaries AND hair in undesirable places (on the upper lip, chin, chest...) it doesn't mean you would be grossly hairy, but would sprout hairs from those general areas. PCOS is treatable in regards to trying to conceive. fertility drugs like Clomid, an oral medication and Pregnyl, an inject-able hormone would be the first step in mastering ovulation in a PCOS patient.

Ultrasound of the ovaries... I also have this and they have done several tests on me over the years... one where they injected my uterus full of water... sounds painfull but it's not in the least... a gyno exam is more painful than this.
