where is an amneocentesis test performed? like what type of doctor?

Depends. Most often they are performed under ultrasound guidance, and performed by the ultrasound doctor. However, sometimes the patient's ob comes to the department and performs the test herself.

I am an Ultrasound technician and I specialize in OB/GYN. I have guided for hundreds of Amniocentesis procedures, and I will tell you this: you are in much better hands with the ultrasound doctor performing the test because they have usually performed hundreds or thousands more than a private ob doctor.

However, to have one ordered, your OB must give you a prescription for it.

an OB/GYN (obstration.) The procedure is taking a bit of the amniotic fluid (the fluid from the sack the baby resides in) with a small needle done while an ultrasound is being performed to be sure they don't injure the baby. Then they are able to perform many tests on this fluid to make several determinations on the health of the baby. (also the sex of baby)

I had one 20 yrs. ago so things might be alittle different now. I had mine done in the hospital by a O.B. -Same day procedure if every thing goes o.k. It does have some risk involved so they do have nurses in the room and more than likely will be doing a ultrasound while doing the amneo. It was pretty much painless and you should be fine if you stay relaxed.

a pregnant lady has an amniocentesis done by her OB/GYN doctor. The gynecologist. It is an office procedure. Look it up on Webmd.
