First of all, it is NOT a W that you are seeing. This is a PEACE SYMBOL developed by Bertrand Russell during the anti-war era of the 1960's. The war protestors wanted a symbol that everyone would recognize and know what it stood for. The Navy uses a signalling code between ships called SEMAPHORE, using flags with diagonal areas of red and yellow. So, Mr. Russell--knowing the anti-war movement was basically about Nuclear Disarmament-- took the symbol for N (both flags down at angles, or your W arms) and D (one flag held up, one held down as in a straight line), placed them one on top of the other and placed them in a circle. It is a symbol still used today as a peace symbol. The site below will show you each letter of the alphabet's positions as well as describe the code's history for you.
