Because the characters are folks people can relate to. We can see something of ourselves, either our present selves or our past selves, in them. Look at the characters and think a little bit about them. Who they are, what they are. Save for the whole magic element of the story (and that helps a great deal in making the series as popular as it is), you can find something of yourself or those you know in them. Let me use Harry as an example.

Harry
1. An Orphan - This is something that real orphans can relate to.
2. Until he's eleven he's with a family who don't love him - Sadly, not all of us grow up in loving families. So this is something folks who grew up, or who are growing up, in such families can relate to.
3. Everyone who knew his parents tell him how much he looks like them (He's always getting "You look like your father except you have your mother's eyes) - This is something most folks can relate to. Aunts and Uncles, grandparents, friends of the family, anyone who knew your family mentioning a resemblence between you and someone in your family (usually parents).
4. Got picked on most of his life until he turn eleven - So many folks have been, or currently are, picked on by bullies either in school or in their own neighborhood.
5. Has a teacher who always seems to be picking on him - Many of us can claim to have had at least one teacher in our life who seems to be out to make our life a living nightmare.
6. Until he turned elven he felt no one loved him - Who hasn't felt, no matter whether they came from a loving family or not, that they were unloved?
7. Until he was eleven he would have liked to have had friends - Friends, something most of us would like to have. And something folks who move a lot would like to make in the places they move to.
8. Famous for something he didn't really do - This is something folks whose parents are famous and well know are more likely to relate to.

Folks can look at the various characters and come up with lists for them that they can then find how the items relate to real people. How many people can say their like Hermione, or know someone like her, who always seems to have the answer to any question asked in class? How many are able to say that like Ron their family is too poor to afford to purchase decent things? Or how many people have known someone, maybe themselves, like Malfoy who liked to talk the talk but found it different when it came time to walk the walk?

I don't know if these books will change history. I do know they have broken just about any and all publishing records out there.

Harry Potter has brought reading back into homes and families. His continuing adventure inspires imaginations and conversations between every member of the family from Grandparent to toddler. He has inspired children to read....what greater gift can anyone give a child?

Popular because it's well written, had good publicity, just enough controversy to intrigue people, and there's mostly just a ton of crap in the fantasy genre so it has no contemporary competition. Kids haven't seen this kind of writing before because the young generation doesn't read enough to have discovered The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, which they would love if they were taught properly by parents and the public schools, and to a lesser degree, The Chronicles of Narnia.
As for changing history? Only to the point of providing a springboard to continue reading and self-educating so we don't lose another generation to self-absorbtion and ignorance.

I think what it did for kids and reading is to help them to be less intimidated with very thick books.

I don't know if the myth of it got kids reading is true or not, but definately got them reading thick books and loving them.
