And what is a business plan? After writing it, who do you give it to or what do you do with it?

Thanks. Best answer to first correct answer.

A company has employees. A business may be any size. That is not a lot of difference.

A business can take several forms - a sole-proprietorship, a partnership, or a company. An icecream or popcorn seller is running a small business. IBM operates a huge business.

A business plan is a document that summarizes the operational and financial objectives of a business and contains the detailed plans and budgets showing how the objectives are to be realized.

Because the business plan contains detailed financial projections, forecasts about your business's performance, and a marketing plan, it's an incredibly useful tool for business planning. Business plans are submitted to top management for their evaluation and decision making.

A business plan should be a work-in-progress. Even successful, growing businesses should maintain a current business plan. Every successful business plan should include something about each of the following areas, since these are what make up the essentials of a good business plan:

Executive Summary
Market Analysis
Company Description
Organization & Management
Marketing & Sales Management
Service or Product Line
Funding Request
Financials
Appendix

Easy. A business refers to the product or service, and the company refers to the people who are buying or selling it. A business plan is an outline of a company's goals and objectives, and it is presented to whomever has vested interest.
