During the first year of life a baby grows very quickly. All three of my baby's went from size small to size large- totally skipping medium.
Hopefully you will have a baby shower and get some wonderful gifts.
Where you shop totally depends on the size of your wallet.
I got so many gifts and hand me downs that I didn't spend a dime on baby clothing for the first year & a half.
Walmart and Target are good places to shop. Also Baby Gap- although might get pricey.
With my daughters first two kids (third is on the way) we shopped Goodwill often getting amazing quality baby clothing that looked brand new or barely used. Often high end expensive baby things.
Another interesting thing happened with her last baby-- I was there when the doctor did the ultrasound and said it was a baby girl. She already had a girl so she had saved some things. We bought lots of pink things. She got gifts before the baby came. I made a wonderful baby blanket in a rosey pink.
I bought one of those bears that you make in the store. It was pink and in a pink dress.
The little girl was suppose to be Madison. Well....when the baby came out the doctor said that Madison was beautiful. I phoned my sister and suddenly saw definate male parts. I started yelling "its a boy its a boy" I can't tell you how suprised and excited we were. As a retired OB nurse there is sometimes a 20% chance of being wrong about the sex of the baby. My point here is to NOT wash up too many new things because it might not match the sex of the baby.
Have a wonderful time with your new little one

Kids grow out of clothes so quickly in the first two years of life that you really shouldn't spend a lot of money on them. Everything my girls own are from garage sale, second hand stores, and clearance racks- and I think they dress pretty darn cute! Not to mention I had one kid that grew much quicker then the other- you can never know if your baby will grow quickly or slowly.
That being said- I LOVE TARGET! Their clothes are reasonably priced- super cute- and hold up really well. Plus- if you are interested in cost- they have great clearance prices. Old Navy is also a favorite- most of their clothes are well priced (some are a little more expensive). Their socks with the rubber sizes on the bottom are my favorites! Although I have found their sizes to run a bit small- I always have to buy my kids the next size up of what I buy at other stores. If you are in an area that has Kohl's they are great also. Walmart is ok for some things- I actually really like the baby connection onesies. A lot of people suggest ebay- just be cautious- I've gotten some great and some bad. Good Luck! There's nothing as fun as shopping for baby clothes!
P.S.- lol to Belinda! It can actually be fun to be frugal- I always laugh when people tell me how expensive an item is they bought- I pride myself on frugality and bargain finding

Wal-Mart!
That little chick of yours is going to grow so fast that the less you spend on clothes he/she will wear only two or three times makes the most sense.
WM baby clothes are certainly cute, have good quality for how long you're going to be using it, and you just can't beat the cost.
Also, the dollar stores will have stuff like baby wipes, baby powder, bottles, pacifiers, etc., and that's a good bargain.
WARNING! Leave the Baby Oil on the shelves at the store. There's no need for it in raising a baby or in taking care of him or her, and it can kill a baby if baby somehow ingested it into his or her lungs. It's called chemical pneumonia and there's nothing doctors can do. I have three little chicks myself and I have never had a need for baby oil.
Also, when you have your baby shower, along with all the other stuff, ask for diapers. I didn't buy diapers for the first nine months of my first child's life, and what a major blessing that was. Diapers are SO expensive, and you go through them so quickly.
I also used 'White Cloud' diapers from Wal-Mart, which worked better and fit better than Luvs, Huggies or Pampers for about half the cost.

Kohls!
Kohls has good brands and some big name brands. You can shop at Babies R Us and get Carters or you could go to Kohls and get it for 1/2 the price. There is variety and lots of options- they have a website if you don't have one near or you want to check out what they have before you go. Quality for less (not like Walmart).
You can find some good deals at Ross if you really hunt through a lot of junk, but I decided to skip Ross after a couple of disappointing trips. Although I did find one cute Ralph Lauren piece. If you aren't worried too much about spending you can do Gap (etc). Even if you can't go to Kohls, Carters outlets are around and their prices really aren't bad. Even though you're going to go through the clothes pretty fast, it doesn't mean you need to pick out some cheapy stuff. Enjoy dressing your baby and she'll enjoy not wearing cheap feeling stuff. You can check out Dillards and Macy's as well. Some of the clothes are expensive, some aren't and there are great sales racks.

I suggest asking friends and relative for some second hand clothes. It just that baby grow out of their clothes easily. And if you do receive second hand clothes just look it over to see which are still in good use. You really could save a lot from that. I know people might disagree my saying but don't you rather use the money on a better use than to buy baby clothes. My baby is now 21 month old and that when I started to buy her clothes but I tell myself to buy nothing more than $5 and to buy one size bigger so that next year she can still be able to wear it.

Target by a long shot. Old Navy if I have extra money to throw around. Also, making pajamas is fun if you like to sew. They don't get worn out of the house, so who cares if you mess up or buy ugly fabric from the remnant bin. Start by sewing a sling and some receiving blankets. The ones at the store are too small for swaddling.
Forgive me for playing "I'm cheaper than you," but I can beat that, Rebecca! I use cloth diapers and I not only save money, I don't have to drive to Wal-Mart half as often! I even make some of them to up the stingy factor. Cloth is fun and cleaner, too. Not to mention cuter!

Go to Ross.. they have a lot of cute stuff there and it's all good quality. Prices range from 2.99 for single items to about 11 bucks for little suits.
I went to Carter's factory outlet.. they have a LOT of cute clothes for very low prices and trust me, they are durable. I also go to Oshkosh factory outlet when they have their 50% off sale which you can check at their website.
I bought my daughter a LOT of clothes and am now expecting my second baby girl. I will for sure use all those clothes again since they are such fantastic quality so they look brand new :o)
I do NOT recommend Walmart, their clothes are cheap quality at the same price as carters. :o)

Ross, you should start your shopping now, since Ross is somewhat of a messy store but the cost savings are enormous. For really cute and in style outfits try baby's R us. But be prepare to spend about $100 for 4 outfits.
