Ya! the police can get it back if your friend has any of the proofs of the purchase of the laptop. The Dell can't help you in this matter.

If your friend can prove that the Dell laptop is hers, then yes, the police can get involved and help her get it back.
Nothing can be done to keep him from using it, by Dell or anyone else. As long as it is not password protected, he can do just about anything he wants to.

She will have to show proof of purchase like a receipt or paid bill or credit card statement. Just having her stuff on it doesn't make it her's. The ex can always claim he bought it & was letting her use it. & if the cops don't make him give it back for whatever reason like it's not at the location it's somewhere else...blah, blah, blah. She will most likely have to file a claim against the ex in small claims court & bring her proof of ownership there & stolen property report.

Dell won't be able to do anything. I would file a police report.

The police is your best bet. Dell could care less who has the laptop. She would need to press charges for theft. If he is unwilling to return it and the police are unwilling to pursue it as a theft, then she will need to sue him for the return of her property. Life in Small Claims Court.
Good Luck

100% definitely. She should be able to file a police report... Depending on the value of the laptop, it could actually be a pretty serious charge. I'm estimating your age here and assuming that a lot of silly stuff is going on - you need to get some parents involved - somebody's going to protect their $XXXX investment, and they'll know how to do it.

michael was exactly right...dell wont do anything if she can prove its hers and not from him or something along those lines the police can make him give it back and most likely take him to jail or or give him community service for theft
