Many institutes are also universities. Many were originally intended for a single purpose -- like MIT, Cal Tech, Georgia Tech were all set up as technology schools.

However, not all institutes are universities. Some are research centers. Others are museums (e.g., The Smithsonian Institute or the Minneapolis Institute of Arts).
