(the typical lawn swing w/awning had a hive between the covered foam pad and the canvas the foam sits on. There was a small chew mark on the back (this is a new swing), and I am wondering if wasps have gone inside to the foam. Have you ever had this problem. Also, what to do, many still want to hang out after we soaked the hive w/water & crushed it.

Wasps will build a nest anywhere they feel that they can be protected and effectively defend the nest. This is why they usually prefer enclosed places or overhangs, such as the eaves of houses.
You need to spray the swing and the surrounding area really well with wasp and hornet spray. Use Raid or Black Flag. Those brands work the best. The wasps will be deterred by the insecticide and leave the swing alone.

You are there and we are not. I could guess (based on having seen a lot of wasps nests) that they went inside but only you are near enough to look and tell us.
