you didn't mention what size it is. If very small, keep it in a glass container with plenty of room to swim around and get plenty of air. Use non-chlorine water. I would feed it any type of fish food you would get at a pet store. Catfish will eat about anything that smells!! It will live the longest if it has water that is circulating, like with some type of water pump.

You need a filter, a tank large enough to fit its adult size(most catfish are VERY big),food, lights, a heater(optional), dechlorinated water, a base for the tank like gravel or sand, a ph test kit(optional), regular water changes, information such as not to put all the fish in at once and to cycle the tank first, and a thermometer(optional).

As with other fish clean balanced water is a must, for fish food buy the sinking type, since catfishes are generally scanvengers and they take food at the bottom.

As in: 1] I went fishing and caught one, or 2] buying one at the store?
#1 - It is illegal in most states to transport live fish. That being said, I've had a catfish living in my stock tank for about three years. I do nothing for it and it does fine.
#2 - Talk to anyone with tanks, the pet shop employee, check online for info...

That really depends on what type of catfish. There are literally hundreds of types common it aquarium keeping that vary from about an inch long to over 3 feet and can be algae eaters and gentle little vegetarians, or powerful and aggressive predators, eating nothing but other fish. If you can narrow down your choice, we can give you some care instructions.
