There is a cat and her 6 kittens in my apartment complex. My roommates and I are happy to take responsibility for them and find them better homes, but we cannot catch the babies. (The mother is very trusting of us.) They are old enough to leave their mother, but have not done so yet. We want to take them in as a group.

If we call Animal Control for help, can we take responsibility, or do they have to take the animals to the pound? Also, is there a fee for it if we do take them in from Control?

Animal Control has tried to catch cats for me in the past (unsuccessful--they were trapped in a ceiling and managed to worm their way to safety before the officer could reach). They catch cats here.

I have never heard of a fee yet from animal getting animals from a house, you can ask animal control to use a humane trap to catch the kittens and the relocate them.I have one of those traps and they just go in and the little door slams shut ; so there secure in there,If you put a can of tuna you will catch a baby; but it will take awhile and lots of tuna to get all of them.I trap and release ferals after they have been spayed and nuetered,Good luck and ps people would love to foster the mama and babies till they can find a good home for all ..

Animal control doesn't catch cats. Thay only come to pick them up if they have died or have already been caught. It (at least where i live) You may be able to rent traps from your local animal control. That is what I would reccomend. It will cost you a couple bucks but will probably make your work easier. If you do take them to animal control there mostl likely will be and impound fee. Ours is $40 per cat i think. I think a humane society will take them for free though.

leave them out of it and find a humane trap to use on the kittens. Try catching the mother, and putting a live trap with moistened tuna in it, but rig it for your control of the trigger mechanism, so you get em all, you might not get too many shots at them, especially one at a time. If they see the others get caught, they will shy from the trap. Humane Society has their uses, i.e. protecting abused animals, but they are like the govt., red tape and fees galore. You could make such a trap with two pieces of tongue and groove wood for the sliding door to drop in, and attach this to the front of a cage. Use a nail in a hole in the sliding door to hold it up, attached to a pull string, to drop it with when they're all eating.

Animal control probably won't do anything anyway.

Have you tried traps?

Chances are, if they haven't been socialized to humans before now, they won't make the best pets.

Right now they are full of kittens and will probably give you the kittens without taking them to the pound. You will have to pay for the service call, of course.

Good luck

i know where i live they take the animals because something like if they bite or anything the animal shelter can be blamed if its a stray that was called about... i would just put food out and maybe eventually you could get to them... or like someone before me said... just call and ask what their policy is. good luck finding them homes... i have one kitty we found and we are having a heluvatime finding a home for her.

Each city is different. Call animal control during regular business hours and ask what their policy is, they'll tell you right over the phone. They should be in the white pages, in the blue section (city government part).

Call and find out. I think they will help you catch them and decide to keep them. But you might want to check that out first.
