My two first cars never had cruise and I absolutely love it on my new used car. I never speed, but I like to use it anyway since I'm on the highway a lot. But, I like using it on local roads too since I work really late at night sometimes and I don't want to get pulled over by a cop for a b.s. reason, like going 1 mph over the speed limit which has actually happened to me (I think they just wanted a reason to pull me over to see if I was under the influence or had anything illegal on me).

75 or 45 there is no difference to your cruise control. All it is doing is controlling the throttle to maintain the speed you set. I'm guessing your dad told you this so you wouldn't us it in the city. It is just a bad idea, typically when people set the cruise they move their foot from the pedal. That could mean an extra split second in reacting to something in the road. There is a reason they tell you not to use it in the city. They don't hate cruise control, it is just a bad idea.

Many years ago, three decades actually cruise controls would drop in and out if borderline speeds were not maintained. The system has improved vastly since those times. Can't imagine anyone wanting to cruise at 40...yawn.

I have no idea why he told you that. There is no difference to the cruise control. You should be fine at 40mph.

As for the cops, if they want to pull you over they will find a reason, no matter what you do. Just be polite to them, they have the power to make your life miserable. good luck.

it won't hurt it, but on some cars cruise control won't work at speeds below 30 mph.

It's no worse on it than going 70 on the freeway, use it as you see fit.
